On 5 January 1919, protests began in #Berlin and spread throughout Germany developing into a #generalstrike. Hundreds of thousands of workers began to #occupy key buildings and an interim #revolutionary committee was established. Disagreement ensued among different factions about whether to negotiate with or overthrow the existing government. During the confusion, the Social Democratic President of #Germany ordered right-wing paramilitary Freikorps to attack the #workers. More than a thousand were killed during and luminary #leftist leaders #RosaLuxemburg and #KarlLiebknecht were murdered during the suppression of the #revolt.
