Statement from YDSA FIU on the Tragic Pedestrian Bridge Collapse

Share:

Today, a bridge which was under construction near Florida International University on the corner of 8th st and 107th collapsed. There are people injured. There are people dead. This includes some of the workers atop the bridge when it collapsed, and pedestrians beneath the bridge and in their cars. At this time, YDSA FIU would like to ask all members of the community to show solidarity during this horrible occasion.

We would also like to extend our condolences to the families of the victims whose lives were lost. We would also like to express sympathy to those recovering.

This bridge was being constructed utilizing an “Accelerated Bridge Construction” model. On Monday, BDI engineering wrote that they were “thrilled to have performed structural monitoring during a spectacular bridge move by #barnhartcrane at #FIU #Miami.” This event certainly calls this model into question.

It’s shocking to imagine that it could have been any one of us, or our friends, at such a busy spot. We continue to sit tight and hope for the best…

Thank you to Miami DSA, and chapters across the nation that have reached out to us with their love and solidarity. Thank you to the first responders who are now engaged in search and rescue operations.

In solidarity,
YDSA FIU
