Film Screening: Starship Troopers
Film Screening: Starship Troopers
April 1, 2024 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Golem Games
2067 NE 163rd St, North Miami Beach, FL 33162, United States
In honor of April Fools’ Day, we’re screening a practical joke of cosmic proportions: STARSHIP TROOPERS, the satirical sci-fi/action film by Paul Verhoeven.
Meet Johnny Rico, a 23rd century high school jock who joins the military of the United Citizen Federation, an Earth government that grants citizenship and voting rights based on federal service. When Earth suffers an interstellar terrorist attack by insect-like aliens known as Arachnids, Rico and his friends become patriotic, bloodthirsty goons willing to sacrifice their lives in a battle for colonization.
Misunderstood by critics who took the movie literally during its initial release, STARSHIP TROOPERS satirizes the militarism of Robert A. Heinlein’s source novel, exposing it as fascist propaganda

Man Marked For Death, 20 Years Later - Screening
Man Marked For Death, 20 Years Later - Screening
April 29, 2024 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Golem Games, 2067 NE 163rd St, North Miami Beach, FL 33162, USA
In honor of May Day, we are screening one of the greatest labor documentaries: MAN MARKED FOR DEATH, 20 YEARS LATER (1984), a film that took two decades to be completed due to political repression.
In 1964, director Eduardo Coutinho began filming MAN MARKED FOR DEATH, a narrative movie telling the true story of assassinated union leader João Pedro Teixeira. Filming was interrupted by the right-wing military coup in Brazil when police invaded the set, confiscated the footage, and stopped the production.
In the early 1980s, as Brazil begins the process to become a democracy, Coutinho manages to recover the 1964 footage and decides to finally finish his movie, this time as a documentary. Traveling around rural areas of the country, he locates and interviews his original cast of peasant league non-actors, including João Pedro’s widow Elizabeth Teixeira, finally telling their side of the story.
One of the few Latin American films to make it in the 2022 Greatest Films of All Time poll by Sight & Sound magazine, MAN MARKED FOR DEATH, 20 YEARS LATER documents what should’ve been the largest proletarian revolution in Latin America and how it was torn apart by political violence.
