Our first screening of the year is the unforgettable LA CÉRÉMONIE, a queer Marxist thriller by master of suspense Claude Chabrol, the “French Hitchcock”.
Sophie (Sandrine Bonnaire) is hired by a wealthy family in the French countryside to work as a live-in housekeeper. The job goes well until Sophie’s dark secret begins to haunt her, much to her employers’ frustration. This leads to Sophie forming a close bond with the town’s postal clerk Jeanne (Isabelle Huppert), an eccentric pariah with a gruesome secret of her own. Jeanne’s hatred of Sophie’s bosses leads to a morbid friendship between the two, almost a shared psychosis, that spirals into class revenge and violence.
Once called “the last Marxist film”, LA CÉRÉMONIE is a macabre masterpiece that perfectly captures French class anxieties. Bong Joon-ho has called this movie a major inspiration for his own class-conscious classic PARASITE.

Our chapter will be having our first ever Chapter Convention on Sunday, January 19th, from 12-4pm at the South Florida AFL CIO Office (4349 NW 36th St, Miami Springs, FL 33166). As we enter a new Trump administration, our chapter is preparing ourselves to fight back against the capitalist class and the far-right! Join us as our chapter comes together to have political discussions and vote on resolutions that will set our course for the next year!
This event will be in-person, and we highly encourage all attendees to join us at the South Florida AFL CIO Office!
